Another “Vagina” Rant
The recent news about the two female students suspended for using the word “vagina” when performing The Vagina Monologues at school had me feeling peeved – once again – at the way so many people use the word “vagina” instead of “vulva” to describe a woman’s genitals.
Hell, if I was the principal, I’d feel tempted to suspend them because they used the wrong word.
I’ve already written a long and opinionated rant about this – and the Vagina Monologues – here.
It’s not just me, you know. There are other women who don’t like this situation either. Today I found this opinion piece on the precise subject, pointing out that the American Red Cross defines oral sex as putting your mouth on a woman’s vagina.
Unfortunately this writer is more concerned about the issue on a basic language level and doesn’t address the feminist concerns behind it. Still, it’s nice to see someone else waving the flag for “vulva” and “clitoris”.
