This week’s movie review at For The Girls is of Tristan Taormino’s Rough Sex. When it first arrived in my mailbox I must admit to feeling very nervous about watching it. Rough Sex is not exactly my bag, baby.

In the end, though, I appreciated it for what it was: a step in the right direction. Tristan has worked her sex-positive magic on a very prickly topic and turned spitting and slapping into a feminist act. Context and consent are always, always the key. A lot of the sex was not my thing but at least there were female orgasms and empowered women enjoying themselves and running the show.

While I was watching the film I made notes, just what I was thinking. I vascillated between arousal, horror and fascination. I enjoyed the interviews and then found the sexy to be alternately super hot and less-than thrilling.

It’s been a while since I’ve posted my “review notes” posts on this blog so I thought it was time I went there again.

So here they are:

This week at For The Girls I’ve reviewed Tristan Taormino’s Expert Guide To Cunnilingus which recently won a prestigious butt plug at the Feminist Porn Awards.

Tristan is doing a great job with her educational series from Vivid and this is no exception. Aside from clearly explaining anatomy and giving handy tips for good pussy licking, the movie offers a number of seriously hot cunnilingus sex scenes.

This month I reviewed Tristan Taormino’s film Chemistry for For The Girls. We’re also featuring an interview with Tristan in our next update which is well worth checking out. Tristan is a sex-positive feminist film maker who I’ve long admired. If you haven’t heard of her before, visit her site Pucker Up.

The idea behind Chemistry is to put 7 porn stars in a house for 36 hours and then let them have sex any way, and anywhere, they want. The stars are given their own cameras to film themselves, and they also give private and revealing interviews in a “confessional.”

I’d like to give you 10 reasons to check out this movie.

1. Jack Lawrence. I didn’t know who he was before this, but now I’m a fan. Jack loves to lick pussy and he knows how to do it very well. On top of that he has a genuine respect for women and a desire to please them – just what we want in a male porn star. It’s good to know there’s a Mr Nice Guy out there somewhere.

5. Making new friends + sex in context Chemistry lets you get to know a group of porn stars so well that they feel like friends by the end of the film. Their interviews give a useful perspective on what turns them on which means the sex is hotter and actually means something. Context is everything, I think.

6. Cheerful Mika Tan. The endless optimism and enthusiasm of Mika Tan is contagious. This chick is cheerier than a perverted Mary Poppins and she obviously loves having sex.

7. Behind the scenes. Chemistry lets you peek behind the scenes on a porn set and gives you a better idea about what’s involved in the making a porn film. That in itself is a fairly fascinating subject.

8. The film holds your interest. I know, that doesn’t sound like much, but considering how many dull and boring a lot of pornos are, this is a big deal. There’s always something new or interesting going on in Chemistry, which means that you’re constantly entertained for over 3 hours. That’s quite an achievement.

9. An entire scene of just pussy licking. …with no intercourse or obligatory facial cumshot. That’s very rare, and it’s fabulous to watch.

10. It’s hot. This is a film that will turn you on and make you want to get it on. And, in the end, I guess that’s the main point.

I recommend it.

I recently reviewed Playgirl’s Addicted To Niko for For The Girls. On the whole it wasn’t bad, I guess, although I did get fairly bored after the first two scenes. Niko makes for beautiful eye candy but his acting isn’t so great. I guess you can’t expect too much of a beefy male stripper. At the same time, everything looks very pretty and the production values are spectacular.

Here’s some of the notes I made while watching the film:

* Niko goes swimming, drinks champagne in the spa, kissing, slo-mo boob kissing… Cunni – and yep, this time she comes. Or at least pretends to, which is enough. I do like how she clenches her thighs around his head, made it look a bit authentic.

* He goes down, she leans on the statue. Actually, that statue is a bit freaky, looks like it’s about to join in. It’s nearly got its hand on her boob… Now she’s giving him a blowjob, and it looks like the statue is lining up for it’s turn! And now the music has gone all elevator style.

* Niko seems inclined to make a chimpanzee “hooting face” every now and again. I’m not sure if a hooting face is a sexy thing for chimpanzees, but Niko makes it look kind of good.

* Cue the sex. Hmm, this is a cuddly position. Nice. Then she’s straddled him. And now he’s standing up. Well, I guess that shows he’s been working out. In case you hadn’t spotted the other evidence of it. Extremely uncomfortable-looking doggy style. I guess she’s been doing spinal twists in yoga. Oh bloody hell, now she’s sucking her finger. * This scene has an interesting surreal and sensual feel to it. Although if this is a museum, why the waterfall? And why is it so steamy? And where did that bed come from? OK, surely steel drums is not the right music for this scene?

* OK, now we’re into the sex. Uncomfortable positions, legs in the air. Now they’re even worse. He’s going to have an eye out if she loses control of her stiletto. I’m getting a leg cramp just watching this.

Matt and Khym is the fourth film from sex documentary makers Comstock Films. This one features a thirty-something heterosexual couple who have been in a relationship for almost 20 years. After many years spent looking after friends and family through various crises, they now have the house to themselves, and they can’t keep their hands off each other.

Like the previous films, this movie features an interview with the couple where we learn about how they met, what makes their relationship tick, and how they like to fuck. Then we’re treated to a peek into their bedroom as they make love for the camera.

This is real sex performed by real people. There’s no acting, no hamming it up for the camera. There’s no awful porn cliches or extreme sex acts. Just an ordinary couple making love, revelling in each other’s bodies and sharing an intimacy born of long-lasting love.

Matt and Khym is a beautiful film. It offers the sort of sex that audiences don’t normally see in porn movies; that is, sex in the context of a relationship, sex performed out of love rather than just for money or exhibitionism. It’s also a testament to the fact that “boring” vanilla sex is actually very hot to watch and it’s a shame more adult films don’t realise this.

As with the previous Comstock movies, I thoroughly recommend this film.

In November I reviewed Dana Dane’s Erocktavision for For The Girls. On the whole I liked the film. It made a nice change from the usual porn I’ve seen. The girl-girl action doesn’t go through the cliches we’ve seen so many times, although I think it’s fair to say that it’s not really a “dyke” film. This movie welcomes it’s female audience but still wants to keep male viewers happy.

Here are some of the notes I made while watching the film:

“So… it’s a music video with lesbian sex. The music sounds like the Doors.”

“Now dance music, shower scenes, chaps, quick clip of horse riding… Horse riding??”

“The Lesbian Couple in this movie are two fairly regular women, thin but with no plastic surgery. Just normal-looking, quite pretty.”

“The visual effects can be a little annoying. I wish the director had chosen the moments for change a little better. Yes, it does happen at good moments, but then sometimes she just flips the button for no apparent reason and I think that detracts.”

“Hmm, I think the horseriding shots verge on the pretentious, just a little.”

“OK, so I’m just not hip to the whole ‘rubbing uglies’ thing. I always thought it was just a creation of men’s porn to simulate fucking between women. Do real lesbians really rub their cunts together to get off? Seems like a very inefficient way to achieve orgasm. There’s also the danger of shaving/waxing burn with each other’s pubic stubble/landing strip.”

I recently reviewed Playgirl’s Burning Lust for For The Girls. Overall, I didn’t mind it, although once again my main complaint is the standardised sex acts and the absence of female orgasms.

Beyond that, though, it’s a nice enough movie to put on in the background. Everyone is all exceptionally beautiful and the movie has production values up the wazoo.

Here’s some of the the things I wrote while watching the film:

This month I reviewed the mega-budget mainstream porn movie Pirates. I figured that since it’s the most expensive porn movie ever, and since reviewers were saying women would like it, I’d give it a try.

It wasn’t bad, I guess, but the sex is extraordinarily formulaic. Actually, this is the first movie where I fast forwarded the sex scenes so I could get to the plot.

It was all worth it for Evan Stone’s hammy acting and very amusing one liners.

I recently wrote up a review of Tristan Taormino’s Ultimate Guide to Anal Sex for Women for For The Girls.

I had a bit of a love-hate relationship with this movie. I loved the emphasis on female pleasure, the real female orgasms, the slow, careful and correct approach to anal sex, and Tristan herself, who is so cheerfully educational about her chosen subject.

I hated John Stagliano. I just wanted him to shut the fuck up. This man’s camerawork and heavy breathing pissed me off SO much, especially when he didn’t have the courtesy to keep the camera on his female star’s face when Tristan was interviewing them. Last week I reviewed Candida Royalle’s Eyes of Desire for For The Girls and I really quite enjoyed the film. It deals with a woman’s exploration of voyeurism via a friend’s telescope, and features then-married couple Missy and Mickey G.

Before I wrote up my piece I went looking for other people’s opinion of the film. Most of the reviews echoed the same complaint I read about all of Candida’s films: “Not hardcore enough.” Oh, and there were numerous raincoater comments about how there just weren’t enough “pop shots.” Sigh. How sad it is that films are rated on the number of male ejaculations.

Candida’s films feature fairly vanilla sex, and she’s less interested in close-up, gynecological shots than she is in depicting realistic, emotionally engaged sex. Not many other porn filmmakers do this, so I always wonder why reviewers consistently expect her to create the same stuff as everybody else.

I also frequently read the comment that the film is “Good for couples and beginners.” I find the phrase rather irksome, to be honest, because it’s always said in a slightly condescending manner. As if we girlies can’t handle the heat, or maybe the people who will enjoy this type of film are not grown up enough yet to enjoy the refined adult tastes of gonzo anal destruction.

What’s wrong with enjoying this kind of film for what it is?

I found Eyes of Desire to be wonderful because it paid attention to the little details during sex scenes, like Missy’s toes curling, or the couple laughing together while they fuck. The sex is realistic and enjoyable to watch. It also features a scene of careful, erotic seduction where very little physical action occurs, except in the minds of the participants. That’s rare in porn.

Yes, the film indulges in a little shameless romanticism and soap-opera acting. I didn’t mind. I found myself feeling drawn toward Mickey G as a romantic character, rather than viewing him as just another dick. I can’t think of another porn film where I would actually want to engage a male character in conversation.

Perhaps it’s just me. I’ve seen far too much porn in the last few years and now all I want to see in a porn film is something different and engaging. It’s entirely possible that some women will find Eyes of Desire to be boring because it’s so vanilla. That’s fine. But I liked it, and I would recommend it – even if you’re not a beginner or a couple…

This week I reviewed Velvet Thrust for For The Girls.

I can only say I’m disappointed. What a wasted opportunity. If the ladies from Inpulse Pictures are reading this, let me say emphatically: just focusing on the guy is not enough, although it’s all very pleasant to watch. You need to get rid of all the other porn cliches before the film will satisfy your female viewers, and I’d say actually showing clitoral stimulation or a female orgasm or two would be a good start.

Anyway, here’s some of the notes I made while watching the film:

“Hmm, a woman sleeping in full makeup. Gothy makeup, what’s more, complete with dark lipliner and fake eyelashes. And perfect hair with a clip in it. And now she’s in the shower, but everything stays perfect. Yep. Looks like this movie is going to be full of believable, real sex…”

“Ha, she’s reaching through and touching his balls but not herself.”

“The guy is good looking but damn, he’s hopeless at keeping his dick in. The woman says ‘Mmm, mmm, mmm- shit! Ow! mmm, mmm…”

“This looks like a weird attempt at a mutual masturbation scene. And they just so happen to have a variety of sex toys to hand, just in their car. Like you do. Perhaps that’s what the glovebox is really for. Ends with him masturbating and cumming onto the windscreen, she’s sitting in the car. They’re gonna need one of those window washer guys at the lights after this. Who feels comfortable enough to masturbate in an open car park? People with dildos in the glovebox, I guess.”

“Oh my god. She took her shoes off!!!”

“Julian has been having fairly intensive sack waxes. Indeed, I suspect that most of the male cast have been visiting the beauticians quite regularly. Either that or they’re going beserk with the Veet.”

“Eeek, it looks like he’s got two bellybuttons! No wait, that’s just a dent in his sixpack.”

The film received a negative panty rating at Clit Critique tribe, and I must agree that it’s a fairly boring movie.

Although I will say that I quite liked the final scene with Julian and Rhiannon. The sex was slow and sensual, the music was nice, and the couple seemed to actually enjoy the sex together. A pity it ends with a cum-in-the-eye facial.

I downloaded the movie from Ms Naughty AEBN because I’m really hesitant to buy hard copies and try and get them through customs.
