Fundamentalist is SHOCKED! That Women Watch Porn

I feel kinda icky putting a video of Pat Robertson on my blog but it’s kind of newsworthy. He’s a fundamentalist Christian from the US who hosts a religious show called The 700 Club. In this video he’s shocked – SHOCKED! I tell you! – to discover that women watch porn.

Having embarrassed his co-host by asking if she likes porn, he goes on to say:

“We always thought this was a male thing, a boy thing, a guy thing, but now it looks like 30% of women are involved in pornography. And there’s an author, kind of a little housewifey type who doesn’t look like some glamour queen or something out of… 50 Shades of Grey is the fastest selling paper book of all time and the book’s erotic content is what some are calling ‘Mommy Porn’. And while most people think of pornography as something men struggle with, a third of the millions of Americans who watch porn are women… and they’re getting addicted to it.”

I figured I’d blog about this because it goes to show just how far we’ve come. I remember 10 years ago people refused to believe that women liked porn. The 30% figure by Nielsen Netratings came out in 2003. The awareness of women’s enjoyment of porn has been growing but it seems as though 50 Shades of Grey has been the thing that has finally made everyone accept it.

And naturally the Christians see it only in terms of degradation and addiction and are very eager to help women overcome their need for it… for a price, of course. Telling women they’re broken because they enjoy a bit of erotica can be very profitable when you stand up and say you have the solution to their “problem”.

  1. Telling women they’re broken because they enjoy a bit of erotica can be very profitable when you stand up and say you have the solution to their “problem”.

That, though, is the fundamentalist business model (though, to be fair, the “profit” may be in getting members [as it were] rather than in money): make people feel guilty and then promise them a way to get rid of the guilty feeling.
