Venus In Furs

by

Venus In FursI feel like there aren’t many new porn for women movies being released at the moment. There seems to be a bit of a lull in production, which is perhaps not surprising given the upheaval in the porn industry at present. For a while there were new feminist porn titles everywhere but right now, not so much.

For my latest For The Girls review I chose to watch Venus In Furs, which is a movie by major studio Adam and Eve. It appears they are following the lead of New Sensations and Wicked by releasing a romance-themed series. This one is called Romantic Encounters.

I’m sure there are some people rolling their eyes at the “women like romance” assumptions the lie behind these films. Everyone has different tastes. Still, it’s nice that the big companies are deliberately labelling it as romance so we all know what we’re in for. Continue Reading

On Religion and Feminism

by

Warning: Religion. This post contains religious discussionOK. This is gonna be a deep, long, TLDNR post. If you’re after porn, scroll down, hit back and check out the other recent posts.

In the last two days there’s been a bit of a flurry of argument on Twitter about Islam, feminism and racism. Specifically, Kitty Stryker said that Anna Span was being racist for saying “You can’t ignore the correlation between Islamic countries and terrible female rights.”

I asked Kitty why she thought that was racist. She said it was because it made a generalisation about all Muslims. I said I saw it as a criticism of Islam. Since Islam is a philosophy (actually a theology) not a race, it’s not racist to criticise it. Cue general discussion with Kitty and my always-eloquent friend Alexis about the whole topic. Alexis said that Western Imperialism has created an idea of “otherness” when it comes to Muslims and we should take that into account when speaking about Islam. It seems a fair point and yet it feels like an excuse, a get-out-of-jail-free card for Islam. The majority of the world’s Catholics are Latin American and we don’t consider it racist to criticise Catholicism or the impact that religion has had on the lives of women, despite the fact that Western Imperialism had a dreadful effect on South America. Female Genitals Are Magical Things

by

ChildbirthWhile I’m sure we can all agree with the post title as a general rule (except perhaps you literal skeptic types out there), I want to apply it specifically to childbirth. Because damn, a woman’s cunt is an amazing thing.

I’m saying this having emerged from a fairly intense week of family business, namely the birth of my brand new nephew. I was privileged to be present at the birth of my sister’s second son and I’m still rather high from the experience. It was momentous, exhausting, emotional and joyful and I’m simply in awe of the entire process. The sheer enormity of the moment drowns everything else out; nothing seems important beyond celebrating the glory of a new life beginning.

Yes, I’m a bit gushy about it all. I will even admit to feeling just a tad clucky, which is a worrying response considering I am still determined not to have kids. But I’m assuming this is just a natural biological response. There’s a new bundle of genes related to me and I can’t help but fall in love with him. And he IS gorgeous.

But back to the wonder of cunts. Continue Reading

The Thought Of Her DVD – Trailer

by

Yesterday I happily mailed off four copies of my new film The Thought Of Her to the Feminist Porn Awards. I’ve spent the last month editing and finalising this, my first long-form erotic film. It’s an extension of the idea behind the short film of the same name – erotic images of male masturbation combined with a sexy voiceover. The tame preview, above, gives an idea of what the film offers.

There are still very few depictions of the male body in porn, at least from a female perspective. This is my contribution.

The DVD isn’t commercially available at present. That could be a few months off. I’m well aware that the meatworld version of porn making – aka DVD creation and distribution – is not a nice place to be. Indeed, actually bothering to make a DVD sounds like a bad financial decision, given that so few people buy them now and they instantly end up on the torrent sites. But I feel like I want to do this, if only to be taken seriously as a filmmaker. To the media, if no-one else, DVDs are still where it’s at.

In any case, enjoy this little preview. The film will also be available online in the next couple of months, hopefully.

Boom Chicka Wow Wow: Music In Porn

by

I’m tits-deep in editing male masturbation scenes at present and currently feeling generally stressed about colour correction and exposure levels. Like you do. And then the other day I lost several hours perusing royalty-free music sites trying to find some ambient background music for a scene. Nothing seemed to fit. On a whim, I asked Twitter what people thought about music in porn.

It seems the resounding answer is no thanks. From what I’m seeing, porn viewers can do without having music playing over the top of sex scenes. They would infinitely prefer to hear the sounds of sex – the oohs, aahs and sundry squelching – than listen to the director’s latest musical thang. I did a bit of Googling and found similar thoughts here, here and here. Dutch women’s porn channel Dusk also said their surveys had found something similar. No music, thanks.

Obviously this isn’t a universal thing – some people don’t mind music if it adds to the general buildup or atmosphere. And others are real fans of the old boom chicka wow wow 70s stuff (although here’s a long rant against it). Continue Reading
