Why Dicks Look Like… Well, Dicks

Thursday, April 30th, 2009

Dick picScientific American has a wonderful article on the evolutionary biology of the human penis, related in a very humourous fashion by writer Jesse Bering.

A couple of quotes:

Having spent the first five years of my academic life studying great ape social cognition, I’ve seen more simian penises than I care to mention. I once spent a summer with a 450-pound silverback gorilla that was hung like a wasp (great guy, though) and baby-sat a lascivious young orangutan that liked to insert his penis in just about anything with a hole, which unfortunately one day included my ear…

First, despite variation in size between individuals, the erect human penis is especially large compared to that of other primates, measuring on average between five and six inches in length and averaging about five inches in circumference. (Often in this column I’ll relate the science at hand to my own experiences, but perhaps this particular piece is best written without my normally generous use of anecdotes.) Even the most well-endowed chimpanzee, the species that is our closest living relative, doesn’t come anywhere near this.

If you’ve ever wanted to know why dicks look the way they do, this is the place to find out.

It’s also worth reading to discover how researchers made use of store-bought sex toys to prove the “upsuck” theory of sperm displacement. I love that idea, although no doubt it would send some prudes into conniptions about the “waste of taxpayers money”.

Bonus, you also get a recipe for fake semen:

The recipe “consisted of 0.08 cups of sifted, white, unbleached flour mixed with 1.06 cups of water. This mixture was brought to a boil, simmered for 15 minutes while being stirred, and allowed to cool.”

I LOVE science.

Now, are you closely studying the penis photo and identifying the coronal ridge? Good girls!

Thanks to Violet Blue for the link.

The Lesbians Are Making The Porn Of The Future

Crash Pad SeriesI’ve been meaning to write this post for a while. The results of the 2009 Feminist Porn Awards have given me a bit more motivation.

It seems to me that the new wave of queer and dyke porn is showing the rest of the adult industry how porn should work. From the way they treat their talent and audience to the content that is produced, the lesbians are doing things differently.

I’m not talking about your standard “girl-girl” stuff, of course. I’m talking about the authentic dyke and queer porn as created by Shine Louise Houston’s Pink and White Productions, or the Good Dyke Porn website, or NoFauxxx, or Madison Young or Nica Noelle or Maria Beatty. These are people, companies and websites who are blazing a new trail, ignoring the old rules about what porn should look like and how it should be made.

The big thing that strikes me is the huge difference in attitude within the lesbian community when it comes to appearing in porn. Apparently the waiting list to appear in Shine’s The Crash Pad Series is enormous. Women are actually queueing for their chance to be in a lesbian porno.

And when they do have their moment in the spotlight, they’re damned proud of it, thank you very much. And their community looks up to them for doing it. There’s no shame, no stigma, no embarrassment. Appearing in lesbian porn is considered to be an exploration of sexuality or an interesting life experience. They are treated extremely well by the filmmakers and are often part of a larger porn-oriented community that supports each other. And dyke porn doesn’t stick to stereotypical body types. Doesn’t matter how you look so long as you’re a good lover on screen.

Contrast this with the way the mainstream, heterosexual industry works. Women are still paid more than men because there’s a stigma attached to being in porn. Actresses are still treated with a lot less respect by a lot of porn companies. There are heirarchies of sex acts to negotiate (”her first anal!”), cosmetic surgery to consider and the growing fear of being washed up at 23. Meanwhile, anti-porn feminists will refuse to believe that mainstream porn actresses are anything other than victims.

When it comes to the content of lesbian porn, things are different again. There are no cliches or rules to be followed. What appears on screen is what lesbians actually do in bed. There’s a sense of realism and a determination to depict sex in honest and meaningful ways. On top of that, there’s no hesitation when it comes to kink or hardcore. Dyke porn can get as dirty as it likes.

There also seems to be a real connection with the audience in queer and dyke porn, an attempt to listen and reflect what the audience wants to see. Contrast this with the endless race to the bottom that is occurring with mainstream porn, the repetition and lack of quality that is regularly churned out.

The ethics and groundbreaking qualities of lesbian and queer pornographers and not unique to those people, of course. There are plenty of other filmmakers and webmasters trying to do things differently. I like to think that I’m one of them. There’s a real desire to create meaningful, ethical porn and I’m sure there’s also a huge audience waiting for it.

And yet I can’t help but feel a little jealous of the lesbians at the moment. They are just going gangbusters. Their audience can’t get enough of the content they create. And damn, they’ve got women waiting months to fuck on camera for them. I’ve got no idea where I’m going to find talent for my next scene!

Imagine a future where all porn was like the current wave of lesbian porn. No sleaze, no stigma, good ethics, decent pay, happy filmmakers, happy talent and happy customers.

I hope it happens one day.

Here’s a brief story from Torontoist about the awards.
Here’s BlogTOs pre-awards report complete with stupid comments.
And here’s a slightly sniffy report of the awards night from Eye Weekly.

Unfortunately there hasn’t been a lot of mainstream media press coverage of the awards this year, which is a bit of a disappointment. The swine flu outbreak has got everyone’s attention at the moment.

For The Girls was a sponsor of this year’s awards. It’s the first time we’ve been officially involved and it was great to get behind an event that honours filmmakers who are creating new and positive visions of porn. I’d like to congratulate all the winners for their efforts and to thank Good For Her for creating such a wonderful event.

PS. I’ve created a special page at Porn Movies For Women that lists nominees and winners of the awards from the last four years.

Glitter Films – Hot New Zealand Porn!

Monday, April 27th, 2009

Triple X Vignettes from Glitter FilmsJust had to do a blog post to draw your attention to Glitter Films. This is a New Zealand adult film production company that has a number of quality DVDs already out there, and more in production. Run by the lovely Astrid, NZs first female porn producer, Glitter Films aim to offer good quality, creative and intelligent films to everyone, be they male, female, gay or straight.

Says Astrid on their “About” page:

I am not out to be controversial or push anything in anyones face, I just think that there is an opportunity for adult films to be so much more than they are, they are so much a part of a lot of peoples lives and it is time that there were some productions out there that were equally good for you mind as well as other parts.

Sex is out there, porn is out there – it won’t go away – so how about just making ethical porn, advocating safe sexual expression that interests your mind and your loins.

I first heard of the gay feature film John at the Berlin Porn Film Festival. Unfortunately I didn’t get to see it then due to a scheduling clash, but I do remembering thinking it was cool that our neighbours in New Zealand were making smut. I’m looking forward to checking out the DVDs, especially the hetero feature Triple X Vignettes.

You can buy the DVDs from Astrid’s site.

(Or should I call them “six fulms”? OK, don’t hit me, Astrid. I couldn’t resist!)

Hey Assholes, We’ve Heard All Those Feminist Porn Award Jokes Before

Friday, April 24th, 2009

Feminist Porn AwardsThe Feminist Porn Awards are about to kick off in Toronto and I’m wishing I could be there for the screenings, workshops and awards.

Meanwhile, the enevitable “witty” comments are starting to appear. The awards are in their fourth year now, so I’d just like say that folks, your oh-so-clever remarks about how feminism and porn are a contradiction in terms are getting a bit old. We’ve heard them all before.

This from someone on Twitter:
“The Feminist Porn Awards? i take it thats women dressing like men fucking each other then?”

Or this from a blog commenter:
“Now this is what i call feminism…..girls objectifying girls for the male gaze.” They then went on to make laugh-out-loud jokes about how feminists must have learnt to use a razor.

Oh, the hilarity.

Come on, people. It’s not that hard to understand that porn and feminism can happily co-exist. Drag yourself out from the cumbersome weight of all those assumptions and try and grasp what we’re doing here. Making porn for women. Making ethical porn. Making BETTER porn. For everybody.

I guess what the comments reveal is how much people still assume all porn is for men – to the point that they can’t even imagine a feminist, female-friendly porn scenario. Porn is always about women getting fucked, right? And it’s always for a male viewer, because we all know how much women hate porn, right?

It it also shows how the “porn objectifies women” dogma has become so utterly tied to the concept of “feminism” that some can’t comprehend the idea that a woman would voluntarily consent and want to be involved in porn. In that world view, all porn is made by predatory men and all the women in it are victims. And if a woman moves behind the camera, she takes on the role of the evil, predatory male. And if a woman says being a porn star is empowering, she’s obviously been fooled or tricked or brainwashed somehow. She doesn’t know her own mind and needs to be saved.

Yep, heard it all before. And, no doubt, we’ll hear it all again in the next week as the FPAs hit the news again.

We’re feminists and we make and enjoy porn. Get over it.

“Virginity Is A Huge Lie”

Wednesday, April 22nd, 2009

The Huffington Post has a great interview with Jessica Valenti, founder of Feministing, about the rise of the “virginity cult” in the US, specifically among Evangelical Christians, and how it is symptomatic of a larger push towards removing women’s rights.

Oh, I definitely think that virginity is a myth. I think that virginity is a huge lie. Having your first sexual encounter certainly is important, and I don’t mean to demean anyone’s understanding of their sexuality or how they want to think of themselves in that way. And I think that can be a really powerful experience and a wonderful first thing. But, as a concept it’s more dangerous than not, because it puts us into these virgin or not virgin categories, which doesn’t really give us a very nuanced perspective or understanding of sexuality.

Well worth reading.

I’m Going To See Alabama 3

Monday, April 13th, 2009

Oooh, I’m excited At last, Alabama 3 are in Australia and I’m off to see them tonight. You might only know them from the Sopranos theme but these guys are one of my all time favourite bands. We went to see them live in Wales in 2005 and they rocked.

I don’t usually do music recommendations, but once you hear Exhile on Coldharbour Lane you’ll be hooked too. Sweet pretty mutherfuckin country acid house music, all night long.

These Are Not Sensible Shoes

Dasolina shoes from Nine West - not sensible in any way
It’s nearly here. My cousin’s lesbian wedding (ooh, sorry, commitment ceremony) is this Saturday. Which means I’m going to be off with the bridesmaid fairies for a little over a week. I’m going to organise some advance blog posts to keep you entertained, but don’t expect anything pithy.

And thus, these shoes. My god. Aren’t they beautiful and terrible? These are the shoes I am wearing as a bridesmaid at the lesbian wedding. Remember that thing about how lesbians were supposed to wear sensible shoes? Forget it.

I’m very, very worried about these shoes. I really like the look of them, but if you read this blog regularly you know that me and high heels get along about as well President Obama and Ann Coulter. And in this metaphor, I get to be Obama and the shoes are Coulter: kind of svelte but also tight, pinchy and seriously unstable.

And this is an outdoor wedding. Beside a lake. I, with my big, square hobbit feet, am being asked to somehow balance myself on 4 inch heels across grass and mud, and look fabulous at the same time.

I will do it of course. This wedding is just so important. It’s a statement of love and acceptance. And it’s an occasion when my extended family will get together and party and prove that all our differences can be overcome through shared experience and ongoing affection.

Wish me luck.

The Inherent Sexiness Of Batman (1960s Version)

Batgirl tied up by Catwoman
Catwoman and Batman share sexual tension

Wasting time on Youtube the other day I encountered an old episode of Batman – the 1960s camp version starring Adam West. Before long I was gleefully surfing through various snippets from the old series and feeling like a kid again.

In the same way that Star Wars was really about Princess Leia, Batman was really a series about Catwoman. And later, Batgirl. Preferably both. I used to hungrily watch each episode hoping to see Julie Newmar in that incredibly sexy black outfit. I wanted to be Catwoman. It didn’t matter that she was the bad guy. She was hot and she kicked butt.

Better than that, she and Batman had that sexual tension thing going on. They were desperate to get into each other’s spandex. One was always tying the other to a chair. Thus, my childhood memories of Batman are tinged with a hint of awakening sexual fantasy. And oh, if only Batman and Catwoman could kiss!

Holy sexual frustration Batman!

I liked Eartha Kitt’s version of Catwoman, but I think I’ll always prefer Julie Newmar.

I have yet to see a single modern Batman movie. Not even the Dark Knight. No yellow utility belts? No sparkly purple costumes? Meh.

The pics are from these Youtube clips that I couldn’t embed:
