Anniversary

Sex before marriage cartoon
13 years ago today, I got married.

It was a beautiful sunny spring day, blue skies and green grass, the river running high and brown after recent rain.

We had the ceremony by the river in my home town, a sacred site to me, the place I had come to play, swim and have fun with my relatives since I was a baby.

Surrounded by family and friends, I walked down the “aisle” accompanied by a friend playing the bagpipes. My sister and two cousins were bridesmaids, decked out in the most perfect purple dresses.

My gorgeous husband was there, sweating in his black suit and purple tie. We giggled as we said our vows and kissed with big smiles on our faces. We drank champagne under the gum trees and listened to the kookaburras heralding our union.

The reception was informal and a helluva lot of fun. Yes, we had a band and my Dad played the drums. Yes, we did the limbo and my Nana led the Time Warp. Yes, we let off a cache of illegal fireworks just as the police drove past.

I cried at the end because I didn’t want the party to be over.

13 years have passed and I know that getting married was the best thing I have ever done. I love my husband so very very much. He is my inspiration, my best friend and my lifelong partner in giggles.

Today we didn’t give each other gifts. We already have everything we need. Kisses, hugs, a nice meal planned for this evening and and glass or two of champagne. And the knowledge that we still love each other just as much as when we first got together, 19 years ago.

I’m happy.
