I Go On Radio, Blog Goes Down

by

Well, damn, what a stressy Sunday morning I’ve had.

I did the Toronto radio interview with Chanelle and I think it went well enough but then five minutes after it was over, the server went down.

A router blew. Ms Naughty was unavailable, as was the Cake and Cunnilingus site and all my other nice bits of porn. I was shaking my fist at the gods. How frustrating that I’d just finished talking about my sites and suddenly they weren’t there.

It’s possible that the problem was caused by a sudden rush of people trying to access the site, but really, do that many people really listen to Toronto university radio? Maybe they do.

I which case, I apologise to all of them that came by and I wasn’t here. I will be flagellating my hosting company with a cat o nine tails in the near future.

It’s Hot When He’s On Top

by

He's On Top by Rachel Kramer Bussel. I was honoured to be asked to take part in Rachel Kramer Bussel’s kinky virtual book tour for her two erotic anthologies She’s On Top and He’s On Top. When asked which book I’d prefer, I went with the latter, perhaps because – vanilla chick that I am – I’m really a sub at heart. It seemed like He’s On Top would make for sexier reading.

One thing I did consider when choosing the book about male dominance was whether that suited my position as a feminist and maker of women’s porn. Shouldn’t I be revelling in stories of female domination, where women have the power and call the shots? Surely it would be better to review the book about hot femmes who demand satisfaction from their subservient men? Because isn’t that what I’m about when it comes to porn? Women on top?

Well, no, not really. Putting aside the issue that erotic power play isn’t necessarily a reflection of real sexual politics, I actually think that He’s On Top got my vote because – in the end – the submissive woman’s orgasm becomes a focus. And female pleasure has always been the top priority for me when it comes to defining porn for women.

He’s On Top features a wide variety of stories involving BDSM and games involving sexual power. The men always have control and they all take great pleasure in wielding that control. At the same time, though, their attention is on their female partners. They are acutely aware of how much pleasure and pain the woman is experiencing. Her orgasm is a focal point, and often, a necessity. Even if she is just a tool for the man’s pleasure, she is still consenting and thoroughly enjoying herself.

And I suspect I’ve been in the porn industry so long that I need to feel that the woman is enjoying herself to appreciate it as sexy. Otherwise all I see is the same ‘ol, same ‘ol.

Reading the book today, curled up in bed with an enormous hangover from last night’s bottle of champagne, I also found myself musing about the issue of erotic power play within porn. Because the thing is, there’s heaps of “femdom” sites, but I can’t think of the term used to describe the reverse situation, where the guys are in control – where he’s on top. Sure, those sites exist, but the fact that there’s no official term for them is almost like they’re considered to be the norm, and femdom is “the other.”

Add to that the increasing tendency for hardcore (non BDSM/leather/latex/fetish) porn to include power play elements, like gagging, slapping or choking. These “rough sex” acts are almost invariably performed upon the woman by the man. If she gives anything back, that’s femdom.

So there’s the implication that male dominance is standard. And what’s missing from the mainstream porn portrayal of dominance is the focus on female pleasure, and the care and protection the male dom should be giving to his submissive partner.

The beauty of erotic fiction is, of course, the ability to portray the relationships between people and thus enrich the sexual experience far beyond the mere mechanical act of cock-in-pussy. No doubt it’s difficult to capture the subtleties involved with such a blunt tool as a camera.

In any case, He’s On Top offers a thrilling glimpse into the special kinds of relationships involved in dominance and submission… and it is pretty fucking hot to boot.

And yes, the women come. A lot.

By the way, I should point out that what I’ve just written is the passing opinion of someone who isn’t involved in the BDSM scene. It may be that my interpretations of erotic power play are somewhat askew due to a lack of intimate knowledge. Perhaps I’ve applied a broad, Dworkinite feminist brush to the gender roles involved, although I seriously hope not. I appreciate that male-female sub/dom sex is not an “us versus them” battle played out in minature. It is what it is; an intense experience between two people, exploring the sensuality inherent in giving up power or taking control. If I’ve offended or erred. I’m sorry.

My review of He’s On Top will appear at For The Girls this month.

Dirty Dancing Turns 20

by

I grow old, I grow old, I shall wear the bottom of my trousers rolled…

Can you believe it? 20 years since Dirty Dancing was released. Jennifer Grey is now 47. My God.

I was not quite 14 when it came out and I remember enjoying the film, although it wasn’t an instant fave. I did, however, buy both the albums, perhaps because I desperately wanted a copy of “Do You Love Me?” – damn, haven’t teenagers got it easy today with their downloads?. I also remember wishing solemnly that I could slowdance to “Time of My Life” at school discos, but no boy would go near me.

Sigh.

Dirty Dancing is still hugely popular, and they’re re-releasing the film in cinemas for the anniversary. This article in USAToday interviews several women about why they love the film so much.

I’ve written about the sexual appeal of Patrick Swayze in that role, and I think that’s a big part of why the young women of today like the movie. She’s the everygirl with the big nose, he’s the hunk… and he loves her. Perfect. Teenage. Fantasy.

I’ve watched the bridal couple re-constructing the last dance at their wedding and it made me smile a lot. I was going to embed it but I think I’m going to opt for the far sexier “Cry To Me” scene.

Now I don’t care what your politics are, that is very, very erotic.

Sexual Origami

by

Sexual origami - unusual sex position.
For your visual and sniggering pleasure, I present my newest free site: Sexual Origami.

I went through and found a whole bunch of photos of couples in very strange sexual positions. There’s some real humdingers in there. Porn’s funny like that. The camera – or convention – demands that participants twist themselves into knots for the sake of the viewer.

Sure, the “piledriver” is good for stretching out a woman’s neck muscles, but it’s not exactly dignified, is it?

I’m Going To Be On Canadian Radio

by

If you’re willing to submit yourself to my Australian accent, you can hear me on the Sex City radio show in Toronto on CIUT FM at around 5.30pm this Saturday night.

That’s 7.30am Sunday morning here. I have to say, I think there should be a rule against 7.30am even existing on Sundays. I am SO not a morning person, so I’m not sure how coherent I’ll be.

Still, now you know.

Hilarious: Scots Guards Dancing Naked

by

The Scots Guards performing Twist and Shout without any trousers. Well thank you, Scots Guards, for giving me a very hearty laugh.

I invite you to sit back and enjoy the pure, unadulterated drunken stupidity of four Scots Guards, pants-off, performing Twist and Shout.

The video features some awful singing in Scottish accents, a few browneyes and one guy performing a “helicopter” dick trick. At least, I think that’s what he was doing. Those “Sun” logos get in the way a bit.

One of them is holding one of those 2 litre plastic bottles of cider that I found so appealing when I was over there in 2005. I can vouch for that stuff – it does make you want to run around with no pants on.

The Scots Guards are those guys in red jackets and bearskin hats responsible for guarding Buckingham Palace. Normally they’re supposed to stand dead still and look very serious.

I think I like this other side of them.

The accompanying article says the boyos are probably going to be kicked out of the regiment for bringing shame on the uniform. A pity. I guess the Queen was not amused.

So here’s the lesson for today. Don’t do a pants-off dance off in the army barracks… and film it.

Sex Toy and Porn Reviewers

by

The Sun has a nice article featuring interviews with women who review sex toys and porn films.

I can empathise with the movie reviewer, who has worked her way through over 100 films for adult shop Ann Summers.

What I first found sexy and titillating, is now just part of my everyday life. These days, I usually stick them on and watch them while I’m doing the ironing.

And I do get porn fatigue. Sometimes, I just want to sit with a cuppa and watch Corrie, not romping naked bodies.

Yep, been there, done that.

You know, it doesn’t matter what you do, a job still becomes a job after a while.

Anna Span’s Hug A Hoodie

by

Hug a Hoodie by Anna Span. British adult filmmaker Anna Span has a new film out called Hug A Hoodie.

The title is a direct quote from Conservative leader David Cameron who was discussing the importance of “understanding troubled youngsters.”

The Daily Record, thrilled that a pornographer has used such a title, said the movie was an “urban film for women who can’t resist a bad boy.”

Strictly News says the film features “chavs”, described as “working class youngsters with no respect for society.”

Sounds like Ali G to me.

Anyway, it’s released next week on Strictly Broadband.

Oh… That’s GOOD

by

There’s a truly delightful, angry post about that Porn for Women book at OnlyMagazine.ca.

Porn for Losers thoroughly puts the boot into the idea that the only thing that turns women on is housework.

A few choice quotes:

Finally ladies, a book that properly sanitizes and legitimizes pornography in a way that allows manufacturers to continue selling us lemon-scented furniture wipes and lets us chastely masturbate at the same time…

Yes, we women get beige apron-clad sensilubes and men get naked chicks shooting live quail out of their vaginas…

and my favourite bit:

Have we really come to the point as a civilization where even something with the word Porn in it can be sold front and centre at the Starbucks and doesn’t have a single cock or puss? … The only thing in this case sadder than sanitized porn is porn that in any way suggests that domesticity is a feminine aphrodisiac.

I think I’m now feeling depressed that this book is on the market, because it means women searching for the real thing are ending up at bloody Amazon.

African Media Supports Female Genital Mutilation

by

Female genital mutilation. This is meant to primarily be an entertainment blog, but today I read something that raised my feminist hackles so much that I have to post about it.

You may not be aware but on March 31 the Eritrean government banned female genital mutilation (FGM, also known as female “circumcision”).

In looking up this story on Google News I was confronted with several opinion pieces in African newspapers by a man called Berhane M. Tekeste.

In these articles, the writer argues that Eritreans have a right to practice FGM as a cultural heritage and that, if done by “safely” by medical practitioners, the procedure is merely a “choice.” He says that FGM may be considered necessary in some cases and he calls upon the government to allow families to perform FGM on their little girls in order to preserve their culture.

ERITREA: Gov’t declares Female Circumcision illegal – Garowe Online, Somalia
Eritrea: Is female circumcision necessary? – Garowe Online, Somalia
Concluding remarks on female circumcision – Eritrea Daily

The article that got my attention was in the Sudan Tribune: Might is right, govt bans female circumcision

The article says similar things to the other opinion pieces. “Female circumcision is no different than any other non-therapeutic and/or aesthetic surgery,” writes Tekeste in his best, reasonable voice.

Things get a little bit more rabid in the comments section, however, when his arguments are challenged by an articulate Abesha woman who has not been mutilated. She makes her point by saying that the equivalent of FGM would be chopping of a man’s penis, and no-one would be defending that practice as a legitimate act of “culture.”

This is what he had to say to her second comment:

Woman, stop fantasizing. There is no need to be hysterical about chopping off your favorite male genital organ, penis. Rest assured, it will never happen. Penis is going to be there for you forever…

My challenge is to provide reasons why FC must be abolished: Medical reasons are indubitably moot; other reasons are simply subjective and constitute no grounds whatsoever to ban FC. You preserved your clit, you are hyperSexy. And that renders you a perfect object in service of male entertainment and pleasure fantasies. Good for you, that is your choice. You ain’t got any right to impose that on others. Enjoy what you got. Good luck.

Nice to know that at least three African media outlets are giving this man space on their opinion page.

None of the three papers aired a view opposing FGM.

The fact is this: FGM is overwhelmingly performed on children. They do not and cannot give their consent. It is a form of child abuse, pure and simple.

FGM robs women of normal sexual function. A girl is born with a clitoris. She is meant to experience sexual pleasure with it. This is not a subjective thing, it is anatomical fact.

FGM in its more severe forms can also interfere with normal bodily functions such as urination and menstruation. It can cause problems with childbirth and many mutilated women suffer from anxiety and other mental problems due to being cut. Preventing FGM prevents bad health.

FGM is a feminist issue, because in so many cases it is used to control women’s sexuality and reproduction, for the benefit of men. While FGM is often performed and upheld by women, I would argue that it is ultimately the result of a patriarchal society, one that puts a priority on women being “marriageable” above all else.

Even if things changed so that only adult, consenting women were able to undergo the “procedure” it would still need to be opposed, because ultimately, “female circumcision” is harmful to women.

Tekeste argues that FGM should be protected as a cultural practice. Unfortunately, this belief in the cultural necessity of FGM is what is making it so hard to eradicate. The Eritrean law is a step in the right direction, but the government has to change attitudes through education to make a real difference. Ultimately, it is the aware women and men of Eritrea and other African nations, who will stop FGM.

But when African media outlets publish views in support of FGM, change becomes a little harder to achieve.

* A note about the photo. I wasn’t sure if I should include this picture because it’s very confronting. The fact is there aren’t many pics of FGM out there and I’ve long been curious as to what it looks like. Having seen it, I can’t help but feel even more opposed to the practice. I’m including it so you can see just why I think Mr Tekeste’s “reasonable” arguments are offensive.

The photo came from this page, which also has a pic of “Sunna” cutting where the clitoral hood and inner labia have been removed.

Male Stripper Train Smash

by

This male stripper video… it’s like a trainsmash. It’s kind of awful but I just can’t look away. This guy may very well have the most impressive blond mullet I’ve ever seen. Combined with tight red shorts, white shoes and Madonna’s “Holiday”, it’s all a bit much.

The vid also features him doing “You Can Leave Your Hat On” which is a bit better.

I will admit, he’s got a nice body. And he can dance better than some male strippers I’ve seen.

Unfortunately I can’t embed the video, you’re just gonna have to visit Youtube here.

Good Google Results? Check The Last Page

by

Google. Google is giving me nightmares.

No, really. I’ve been waking up in the middle of the night for the last week or so, panicking about duplicate content, robots.txt files and how my blog software may have ruined all my rankings.

The reason I’ve become obsessed is that Google has decided Ms Naughty is spam, and booted me to the very end of the search results. Of course, you’re not actually supposed to confess such things in public in case people decide that Google is right and you’re wrong, but I’m sure those that know me and this site realise that this is just a case of mistaken identity. I work hard to make my site relevant and useful.

And I’m really hoping that Google will work this out soon.

I had never really looked into the murky, haphazard world of search engine optimisation before. I’d always just built sites according to the golden rule, which is to cater to your users and make a worthy site that people will like – and link to.

Up until January, that worked well. But then something changed in Google’s algorithm and suddenly I was persona non-grata. My blog posts are regularly relegated to the last pages of a search.

And it’s not just me this has happened to. A large number of previously authoritative sites are now fighting out it for last spot. Nobody knows why. It could be because blog software creates duplicate content all over the place, but that’s just a theory. It could even be because I took part in the Sugasm, which is meant to be a blog-sharing thing, but could now be seen as spamming. Who knows?

But here’s the thing. It now means that if you want relevant results from Google, you should set your results limit to 100 and then check the very last page. Because that’s where you’ll find some useful information.

Some examples.

A search for the term “real lesbian” will give a couple of relevant results on the first page. Then, right at the very end, you’ll find a link to Pink and White productions – makers of VERY authentic lesbian erotica.

Type in the term “sex blogs” and there at the end you’ll find Viviane’s Sex Carnival – one of the more popular sex blog sites – and an article on sex blogging from none other than Clean Sheets Ezine.

Is this just an extention of the Google “disappears” sex blogs story from late December? Possibly. My problem is that this post is unlikely to appear in Boing Boing or the mainstream media and thus get the attention of Matt Cutts who will step in to personally fix the blogs in question.

And maybe that will be because this post will be on the fucking last page and no-one will ever read it.

Yes, I’m a little tense today.

I’m not going to claim that my site doesn’t have a commercial motive, because it does. At the same time, this blog is not just a spam blog. I spend a lot of time researching on-topic posts and I know that what I write is useful to surfers.

I’ve spent a shitload of time in the last week trying to clean up the site and make it more Google-friendly. I worry that I’m actually making it less user-friendly (have you noticed the tags are gone?), but that’s the way things are starting to go. Trying to please Google turns you into a mad, harried thing, scurrying to satisfy the whims of a giant without actually knowing what those whims really are.

So… I guess this post is really just a sad rant, an attempt to get my frustration out into cyberspace so I can at least have a good nights sleep without dreaming about Google.

If nothing else, I can take comfort in Yahoo. They still offer the kind of relevant results Google used to give a couple of years ago.

Gratuitous Male Nudity

by

This is Spymonkey, performing at the Melbourne International Comedy Gala in 2006. Yes, those are naked men running around on stage. This is gratuitous male nudity for no other reason except that it’s damned funny.

Oh, and that little “bum wag” bit by the woman at the end… that’s a classic “I’m running naked to the bathroom past my man” move.
