Radical Feminists Vs Porn For Women

Searching Google for “porn for women” I found this this blog post by a radical feminist, announcing why women’s erotica is against the sisterhood.

This blogger toes the old line about how porn only exists so men can degrade women, and wrongly declares that the word “pornography” means “depictions of women as vile whores” in Greek (the real translation is “writing of/about harlots”).

She then says that, since porn’s only purpose is to degrade, it can’t be applied to men as subjects, and thus porn for women doesn’t make sense. She also goes on to conclude that porn for women simply re-inforces the patriarchy by perpetuating stereotypes.

“‘Porn for girls’ is at best just more of the same and at worst a dangerous pseudo-equality illusion serving to pacify increasing numbers of powerful-to-be women.”

Her comments on the way naked men are posed and depicted are interesting, especially given that what she describes could easily be found on a gay site. How do radical feminists deal with the idea of gay porn? Who is degrading whom in that scenario?

I sat down and started writing a comment but then I discovered that this blogger is so extreme she won’t allow comments from anyone who would dissent with her point of view. Hell, she won’t allow you to post if you’re a man, although how she’s going to know is beyond me.

I found her blog and way of thinking to be more bizarre than offensive. Here is someone who absolutely refuses to accept the idea that porn could be something as innocuous as masturbation material. Yes, it can be political (and often sexist) but to actually believe that modern porn is the result of some kind of male conspiracy is just strange. This is a woman deeply immersed in the idea of victimhood.

In the past I’ve blogged about the impossibility of insisting on a proper feminist sexuality (But what if stereotypes turn you on?). This blogger has given me an example of a radical feminist actually attempting to alter her own sexual fantasies to be politically correct. It seems that she’s partially succeeded, although I would personally say that simply lying on the beach in the sun is not quite enough to ring my bell.

I’m sure that, to this woman, I constitute the worst of the worst, a traitor to the sisterhood, offering up stereotypical images that cause women to masturbate and thus distract them from the important business of kicking men in the balls. Ah well. I can only repeat what I believe:

Porn is not inherently bad or sexist.
Porn’s main purpose is to encourage masturbation.
Porn aimed at women is not inherently stereotypical.
Women aren’t perpetual victims.
Women are able to make choices about sex that are self-aware and honest, and that includes choosing what may appear to be a stereotypical role. Feminism is about choice.
Female sexuality cannot exist in a vacuum. Our society shapes us to be who we are and we shouldn’t be ashamed of expressing that sexuality.

OK? So… go and check out the linklist and enjoy some good porn for women, knowing full well that somewhere, somehow, a radical feminist is getting her knickers in a knot about it.
