Sam’s Weekend As A Woman

by

I’ve linked to the blog All Men Are Liars, mainly because Sam De Brito is an excellent writer and I suspect he’s actually a closet feminist.

I’ve been meaning to put this video up for a while. It documents Sam’s weekend spent as a woman, complete with wig, dresses, high heels and Brazilian wax. I recommend watching it just for the waxing part.

“I felt like a plucked, raw chicken below the waist.”

It’s also a great example of a man trying to empathise with women in a very real and unusual way. There’s an entire reality series in this if someone is daring enough to do it.

Survey Of What Women Find Sexy

by

Two pics from the Time Out Survey of What Women Find Sexy.NY Time Out’s Sex Issue has heaps of great reading, including Audacia Ray’s personal discovery of double penetration and a whacky article entitled I Want To Have Sex With My Bicycle.

There’s also an online photo survey about what women find sexy. In the interests of science I decided to write down the statistics, unscientific though they are. It’s interesting that I could guess the answers in most cases, although some of the photos were obscure and probably screwed up the answers a little.

Cultural Assumptions About Women

by

Everybody knows that women talk more than men, right? We’re just naturally communicative creatures who like to discuss our thoughts and feelings more than men do.

Nope.

Turns out men and women use roughly the same amount of words each day, taking into account individual variations. A new study published in Science magazine has found that women say 16,125 words per day, while men say 15,669. The difference is statistically negligible. Full story here.

The idea that women talk more is an ingrained cultural assumption. It’s been expressed in jokes, sitcoms, literature, music… we’ve all come to accept that it as truth. Now science proves it wrong.

It got me thinking about what other cultural assumptions are made about women in our society. How about:

* Women are more nuturing
* Children are better off with their mothers because women make better parents
* Women are more emotional and often irrational
* Women aren’t any good at maths and science
* Women don’t make good drivers
* Female politicians are more caring and would be less likely to start wars if they were in power
* Women are “gatherers” (and men are “hunters”)

And when it comes to sex, there’s:

* Women are less interested in sex than men
* Women aren’t visually stimulated
* A woman’s “nesting” instinct drives her search for mates
* Women are attracted to powerful men who make lots of money
* Women need to be seduced or lured into the bedroom

How many of these are just baseless generalisations? How many can be said to have a basis in science or research? Do we do the world a disservice by relying on “conventional wisdom”?

Figleaf On Women, Porn and Sex

by

Figleaf has made an interesting post about porn for women here.

He’s suggesting that society thinks that most women aren’t really interested in sex – he’s calls it the “no-sex class” and that this is a reason why it may be difficult to define “porn for women.”

I won’t do a big post here because I wrote a lengthy comment on his blog. I do think it’s an interesting idea and a corollary of the theory that “women aren’t visual.” The original theory behind “couples” films is that they’re for men to coax women into watching porn (and having sex), as opposed to something that a couple would willingly do together. So in essence a mainstream “couples” film casts women into the no-sex role.

Acknowledging that women like sex and like porn is a big step, really. It’s been a while since I’ve considered that beyond it being a given, but in truth vast numbers of people in the porn industry have yet to do that. The whole “reality” craze is built on the idea of tricking women into sex. And the constant use of the words “slut” and “whore” are essentially about that double standard, where porn celebrates women who have sex and yet derides them for doing so.

And porn that does acknowledge female desire is often more enjoyable. It’s certainly less offensive. Lots to think about here.
