Labyrinth, sexual tension and Davie Bowie's AreaThis new viewing has reminded me of the romantic/sexual undertones of the film. I always found it wonderful fodder for adolescent fantasies of being adored by handsome, slightly evil princes. Sarah, the main character, is half-child, half adult, on the brink of discovering her womanhood. Jareth, the goblin king, is in love with her, although he does tend to pick rather nasty ways of showing it. Of course, this fits in with the romantic fantasies of teenage girls, if only because the teenage boys are usually so horrible in return. “I have turned the world upside down, and I’ve done it all for you,” he says. The film is ostensibly for children, but there is definitely sexual tension between Jennifer Connelly and David Bowie. The fact that Jennifer was only 14 at the time the film was made does raise some uncomfortable connotations… but I would say the average 14 year old romantically inclined girl won’t see it that way. The scene where they dance in an elaborate ballroom is full of meaningful glances and much longing. In any case, Labyrinth made me admire Davie Bowie, if only because I thought he was something of a hornbag in that fright wig and snazzy jacket. What I hadn’t noticed before was the extremely prominent display of Bowie’s package in those tights. It’s hard to pay attention to the film when you’re getting an eyeful of Bowie camel toe smack bang in the middle of the screen. Interestingly, others were more vigilant when it came to checking out the lower half. In fact, I was delighted to find an entire site devoted to David Bowie’s Area. “David Bowie's Area exists throughout the entire universe, flowing around and through everything that is, surrounding us perpetually in its crotchful goodness.” The site advises the best way to immerse oneself in DBAology, including watching Labyrinth multiple times and noting what colour Bowie’s tights are, even though “the mysterious bulge in Bowie's tights will throb out at you throughout the movie and you may not be able to notice much else until it's over” Bowie’s crotch bulge obviously made an impression on several people, as the film is listed as a source of evil by the Christian Analysis of American Culture (review here. Among the long list of sins contained in the film (“euphemism of the most foul of the foul words by a sprite”, “sounds of flatulence”) are those of sexual immorality, specifically listed as: 1. Ghosting of male anatomy through thin clothing, repeatedly. 2. Camera angle to force viewer on private parts, twice. Lock up your kids! Even Jim Henson was producing dirty movies, it seems. PS. I should say that I adored everything Jim Henson ever did, the man was a genius and 16 May 1990 was a very sad day indeed.
