Porn for Women as a sexist conceptOne comment at LiveJournal had me feeling a little angry, however. Artvamp wrote: "And I just want to state, for the record, that the idea of porn made "just for women" is quite sexist, and assumes WAY too much about what women do and don't like." Well, allow me to retort. As porn is about sex, and as women see and experience sex in a certain way that is by its very nature different to men, it must be somewhat "sexist". But semantics aside, the issue here is not content, but rather creating a space for women to enjoy sexually explicit material. Porn for women is essentially a feminist concept - it's a reaction against the male domination that exists in most mainstream porn, as well as being an expression of female sexuality. Porn for women is all about a woman's point of view. It's about putting female pleasure first. It's about the who the audience is, not the necessarily the content. As a creator of women's erotica, I've often been asked to define porn for women. It's almost impossible, because as I've found, women do have extremely eclectic tastes when it comes to sex. The idea that porn for women must equal naked men is one of the more common misconceptions, but even trying to define it as being "romantic" doesn't really work. There's plenty of women out there who love hardcore as much as the next man. So, in the end, the only way to really define porn for women is to say it's about giving women a voice to express their sexuality, and it's about depicting sex from a woman's perspective. Female orgasm, not male, becomes the ultimate goal. And if you consider how the vast majority of porn is created for men, depicts male fantasies, shows women from a male point of view, and focuses on the male orgasm (especially via the money shot), then there is a distinct need for women's porn. Of course, such a broadly defined goal means that "porn for women" can include such varied content as femdom bdsm, lesbian sex, amateur couples through to highbrow erotic fiction or art photography. In a practical sense, in terms of the porn that I create for female surfers, it's more a matter of hetero/vanilla sex, with a focus on intimacy and emotion. For The Girls features a lot of that stuff, although it also has a variety of galleries including femdom, group sex and lesbian. That is not the only porn for women, but it's the stuff I promote because it's what I myself would like to see. It WOULD be sexist if I was to say that's the only kind of porn that women like, but I don't say that, and I never have. I'm just one person working to create a more equal sexual space for women to enjoy themselves. Posted: Saturday 3rd July 2004, 8:04 PM Back to the Blog
