Varda Burstyn talks anti-censorship feminism

An looks at the 1981 film Not a Love Story: A Film about Pornography and the surrounding feminist crusades against any kind of porn.

What I found interesting in this article was Vanda Burstyn's recollections of her stand against the rabid extremism within feminism at the time. Vanda felt that, while some porn was sexist and offensive, censoring all pornography did not help to change society or to remove the sexism inherent in porn.

She recounts being "viciously attacked" by those who opposed her views. "At the end of every one of my speeches, women would come up and say they agreed with me but were afraid to say so because they'd be kicked out of their groups."

I also found these comments relevant for today:

"To me, it seemed that all sexual representation got thrown in with pornography. To suggest women can't represent our sexuality is insane. That penetration is rape and that all men are rapists were important ideas in the current that I worked against. I thought there were more important things to address; for example, putting out our own media so that we could put out our own versions of sexuality and erotica."

Wanting to create women's porn is not new, and it's nice to see that some women view it as a legitimate feminist exercise.

Thus, when the crazed Christian conservatives want to use "protecting women" as an excuse to control what adults see, I'll point out that I'm working to protect women as well.
