A little bit more about 18 USC 2257It was originally passed by the US Congress some years ago following the Traci Lords scandal. Traci used a fake ID to get into porn and made numerous films while underage. When it was revealed that she had been under 18 the industry had to recall every product in which she was involved, and the owners of her movie agency were arrested. The original 2257 law required photographers and film producers to obtain official identification to ensure that all performers were over 18. In it's original state, 2257 was a good law. It made sense. It provided some regulation of an otherwise unregulated industry, and it was a good thing. The new ruling adds the requirement that anyone who publishes a sexually explicit image must also have that ID, even if they had nothing to do with the original model or photo shoot. Even if that photo shoot occurred ten years ago. This is not an improvement. The new ruling will do nothing to prevent child pornography. Indeed, another Traci Lords could step up and do exactly the same thing if her fake ID looked believable enough. And it certainly won't do anything to stop the cruel bastards who actually exploit children. All the ruling does is create beaurocratic obstacles for law-abiding pornographers. Which is exactly the purpose of the whole shebang. Posted: Wednesday 29th June 2005, 7:56 AM Back to the Blog
