Love's Passion Review NotesOverall I really liked this movie. I liked that Veronica Hart was trying to introduce a modicum of love and passion into porn. I liked that she decided to unashamedly infuse the film with uber-romance novel sensitivities. I liked that it was shot on film, had decent acting, a good plot, and a heroine who wanted monogamy. All these things are unusual in porn, and it's nice to see something different. Of course, the film is derided by male porn reviewers as one of those boring "women's films". I found myself laughing at the AVN review. The male reviewer complains that: "For the plot's sake, there are three different encounters between Ashton and Mickey. Individually, they're all decent (especially when he nails her tush); but taken as a whole, some variant partners would have helped." Well, no, actually, given that one of the major plot points of this film is that Juli Ashton's character deliberately keeps herself celibate and monogamous because she's in love. Obviously such a concept is so alien to regular porn reviewers that they can't really grasp it. Love's Passion aims itself squarely at women who dig Fabio-covered romance novels, something that no doubt gets the "You're too stereotypical" brigade up in arms. Nonetheless, I think it's worth recommending to women because it's got some great sex in it and focuses on the idea that intimacy and love can make sex even hotter. That aside, there were still bits that bugged me about this film. The gratuitous and unnecessary lesbian scenes being one of them. And so, in the interests of fairness, I'm going to publish some of my comments written while watching: Scene where the friends come around: I don’t know any women who try on lingerie naked together like this. It’s like a male idea of what women do when they’re alone together. And if they’re lesbians... well, they're acting like really vacuous supermodel lesbians. It’s all a bit of a fashion show. Kinda dumb really. And I hope they’ve paid for those g-strings. They’re gonna have a hell of a time returning them. Hmmm. Threesome scene with a male gigolo. What's with this? There’s a guy. He’s being paid to have sex with you. Why would you give him a blowjob? Why would BOTH of them do it? Goddamit you girls! Make him get on his knees! Make HIM do the fucking work! Ooh, an acrobatic cunni scene. How is she doing that?? Good stomach muscles? I can’t see any wires. How do you concentrate on cunnilingus when your stomach muscles are doing a full blown abdominal workout? Ooh, he’s lying dead straight across two carpeted steps while the blonde one shags him. I’m sure his chiropractor will have something to say about that! Rayveness is urging her on like some kind of a coach, or a midwife. "Come on, you're doing fine..." Hmmm. Anal scene... looks kinda dry. And now she’s masturbating with the curtains open. Draw the blinds, woman! It’s funny how a woman can watch another woman masturbate on screen and it doesn’t make her "gay" but you won’t catch a straight guy watching another straight guy whack off. Bloody lesbian scenes. The setups just seem so terribly fake. There three chicks just come across as a bunch of horny bimbos... AND they’re doing it with the blinds open. Dear God! TC wrote about the need for tasteful window dressings. Forget the "tasteful" part! Don’t you know the neighbours are watching???? I think "Lick/suck/fuck/work that pussy/ass/cock" is becoming a pet hate of mine. It's a porn cliche, but to me it just doesn't sound natural or sexy. It's distracting.
