And now here comes the .xxx domainThe adult industry is not terribly fussed with this. On the surface it may seem like a good idea, but in the wake of the ridiculous 2257 ruling it feels like a concerted attack on the industry. How long, people are asking, before the US government passes some excessive law to make it illegal to have adult material on a .com domain? There'll be much self-righteous talk about how they're "protecting the kids" but once again it will be an unworkable idea. How do you define "adult content"? And how do you enforce a US law on the entire internet? The other concern about an enforced .xxx move is that US webmasters who have set up a brand name under their .com would be forced to give it up to be ghettoised under .xxx. And unscrupulous people may successfully buy existing brand name .xxx domains, essentially stealing a business. Daze Reader has a very similar take on the situation, and says the whole thing - if it happens - would be challenged legally and ruled unconstitutional. This is a likely situation, but the process is unnecessary in the first place. And then there's the whole issue that the US government is trying to force its stunted sexual morality onto the rest of the world by trying to regulate the internet. Oh, by the way, did you know that the US government also passed a law this week making it legal to look at people's ISP records without telling them?
