Playgirl editor fired; Was politics or idiotic writing to blame?Apparently she then made comments to right wing blogger Matt Drudge along the lines of: "I was fired because of my political beliefs." "I just wanted to let you know of the fear the liberal left has about a woman with power possessing Republican views," she said. My reaction was not so much fear as disappointment that her article was so juvenile… and I’m not entirely certain that what Michelle wrote could even be successfully equated with "Republican views". Violet Blue has published more of her article on her Tiny Nibbles blog, and it seems to suggest that my previous comments were correct. Here’s another example of Zipp’s hard hitting political commentary: "Red, the Republican color, is the color of lust, romance, passion, the devil, and Valentine's Day. Democratic blue is cool, detached, icy, blue balls." Hmmmm. Deep. One can’t help but wonder if it wasn’t politics but bad writing or a misfiring sense of humour that did the real damage to Michelle’s career? Playgirl’s official position is that they are moving in a "new direction editorially and creatively" and thus no longer required Zipp’s services. Interestingly, this whole incident has coincided with a visit to Playgirl by Violet Blue, who recently left her job at Good Vibrations. In her blog entry, Violet says: "I can't talk about what I did in NY, but I can say that I didn't hold back my opinion about women and porn and sex, at all. And you know what? Now I want to work with Playgirl." I can’t help but speculate as to what involvement Violet will have with Playgirl in the future. Are they planning a more hardcore women’s magazine? Are they going to revamp Playgirl and make it more edgy? Is there something else in the wings? Whatever happens, I do think that having Violet involved will be a bonus. She has long been a champion of decent porn – and she’s also got a beef with the idea that porn for women has to be “soft and girly” (I should know – For The Girls was on the receiving end before I pointed out what we were really about). In any case, I’ll be keeping an eye on what happens next. Posted: Thursday 7th April 2005, 2:02 AM Back to the Blog
