Submliminal advertising and sexThis site says advertisers often use ice to hide their subliminal messages, because ice can distort images. It has a few examples of what the writer believes are examples of subliminal advertising. This site features another selection of ads with hidden messages, including the Gilbey's Gin ad where the ice spells out S-E-X. For many, the term "subliminal advertising" refers to the concept of flashing images on a screen for a split second in the middle of another program. According to the theory, the conscious mind is not aware of the "flash", however the advertising message embeds itself into the unconscious mind, to reemerge at a later time. The urban myth site Snopes says the idea of submliminal messages flashing up on screens for 1/1000th of a second is actually false, and that the man who conducted the original subliminal advertising experiment later admitted to making it all up.
