Cole, I'm nodding along with all these issues. You're right about the baby too; I was ready to strangle her for the stupidity of it all. And yet the series has some kind of weird hold on me. I still liked it.

St Clair you also make good points about the problems presented by these characters.

I agree that the series is not porn in the literal sense. It is, however, self-gratifying for young, sexually repressed women.
That being said, I have a lot of the same objections to the series that most feminists do. It's annoying that Bella is essentially powerless until she fully ties herself to Edward.
I also came to hate how whiney it often was, and was really pissed at the last book of the series, because Bella stopped caring about Edward as soon as she (stupidly) popped out the demon baby.
The books were all anticipation and no action. It was all dragged out for too long. Then, aside from there being almost no sex, there was also no biting.
I'll take almost any vampire writer over Stephanie Meyer.

I also find those kinds of scenarios in porn to be rather disturbing. The only one I haven't objected to is Tristan Taormino's Rough Sex. In that film it was clearly stated that the scenes were a fantasy and interviews with the models made their consent clear. I honestly think this is something that should happen more in "edgy" porn; context is everything.

I read Sam Benjamine's article a while ago and was pleased to hear someone from the industry doing some soul searching. It takes guts to admit your errors.

A few days ago I saw a trailer for a hetro porn movie on the website of a female porn star/director. The movie was a "punishment fantasy" involving the female star being punished by her "husband" for making a mess in the kitchen, including face slapping.

It was about the most anti-sexy thing I have ever seen, and I only saw the first couple of minutes.

The director asked the question of viewers if they thought that it was "too much"

I was very pleased to see that both of the men who commented said "Yes! Too much". What astounded me was that two women who commented said that it was great.

I am a big fan on BDSM, because on the whole it is a society with rules that people follow and respect. It has boundaries.

The movie mentioned above takes the actions of BDSM but removes the rules and boundaries. This is (to my mind) a dangerous thing to do.

I grew up being told never to hit girls (or guys, unless it was self defence), and I never have, or would. I have however applied (and received) a riding crop and other forms of discipline in a safe consensual environment.

Anything that doesn't reinforce the rights of individuals to respect and physical safety in porn is, bad. End of story, in my opinion.

So, bring on the positive porn. Lets stop feeding the desires of the "cowardly".

I'm sure that dodgy practices within the industry have contributed to its decline. People have long had a mistrust of adult sites that is often justified; there are a lot of very scammy operators in this business. One of the things we've always tried to promote with For The Girls was honesty: we're up front about what we offer, we don't spam, we make it easy to cancel, we don't do "cross sales" (signing members up for stuff they don't want or need). For us it's a matter of: here's our site, it's got nearly 7 years worth of pics, movies and written content. If you give us your money, we'll give you a lot of entertainment in return and we'll be able to keep offering new stuff as time goes on. I'm proud of that honesty. And I think that old-fashioned "barter" model needs to be retained. Value for money should be encouraged.

The DVD side of the business has stagnated somewhat; so much porn is churned out using the same formula with the added extra of scenes becoming "harder" (i.e. crueler, more degrading). The DVD has had its run as a delivery model; the internet offers a much better way of viewing the content but it also creates problems with regards to controlling that content.

I've been reading numerous postings about file sharing and piracy. Simple economics has come into play: a thing is only ever worth what people are willing to pay for it. If everyone wants porn and music for free... then is porn and music worth nothing in and of itself? I'm not sure. I think the profit motive is always a factor when it comes to creativity. Even Van Gogh wanted to sell his paintings. Being paid is a very big form of motivation. And as I've said, you need money to be able to create good porn. But I suspect a lot of people have become so disillusioned with the big companies and their misuse of copyright that the "screw you" ethic will prevail for some time.

First let me say congratulations on your success.

I think the expectation of free porn is something of a side effect of the non-acceptance of pornography in society. When you had to go into a store to buy a film or magazine, or even mail order, it was easy to feel society's disapproval. Even with online sign ups, you still have credit card statements to explain. It hasn't helped that many sites seem to try to squeeze you for as much money as possible with auto sign ups to other sites. Good pornography certainly should be supported.

On the other hand, I suppose if you look at the music industry, and now film and television industries, they're also experiencing similar problems.

I don't know if there's a good, easy solution.

Hi i personally am concerned about idea of banning films of women ejaculating or any other form of film depicting fetishes; i feel it will drive things underground where it will only become a bigger problem and the people we are trying to protect will suffer even more. The idea that there are people in the community who practice fetishes in a safe way, don't have families is absurd. I am sure those same people will be doing the utmost to protect there most cherished asset. I think maybe we should burn books as well that way we be assured that we eradicate everything, oh whoops i almost forgot the most unseemly place of all the mind has anyone any suggestions of how to filter that, i was into fetishes at a young age long before i saw any adult material.
             Thank you for listening

Thanks for sharing your perspective - this is a great read. When I started doing this, there were maybe five movies a year that were really different and exciting. Now it seems like we are adding five a month - I can't even watch them all.

It will be interesting to see what happens in the future, but I have to say that the present is a pretty exciting time for women's porn!

Beautiful cover above. I read your posting regarding erotica book covers with great interest because I decided to forego using a photo of a model on the cover of my erotic fiction anthology (Surprise-publication 6/1/10). Indeed, I consider a subtle cover to be an advantage because the reader can read the book anywhere. As a straight woman, I am a little perplexed at why marketers think that a nude/partially nude woman on the cover will entice me to buy a book. And since books often feature sex of several persuasions, why is it they think a female symbolizes all flavors?

I would love to send you a copy of my book. Just say the word. Thanks.
